Overview
One of Fashion's Thinkers is an animated infographic on Japanese fashion designer Junya Watanabe, built around monozukuri, the idea that shapes how he talks about his own work. Typography, figures, and graphic motifs were built to carry meaning about his practice, so that the visuals reinforce the text instead of merely accompanying it.
Process
Visual Language
Several graphic elements in the piece were designed to reference Watanabe's own work rather than stand as arbitrary decoration. The walking figure's silhouette is based on a Watanabe runway look, and the words "fashion show" and "Paris" are arranged within it to form the garment itself, so that the information about his Paris show is delivered through the very kind of look he presented. For the layered concentric rings framing the eye, I drew from the circular form of another piece in his collection, turning a recognizable shape from his work into an original visual element in the piece.
