Virtual Observers
Overview
Virtual Observers is a TV title sequence set in a fictional sci-fi universe. I built the concept around three virtual explorers drifting through deep space, searching for life, and changing with every passing cycle. I sourced footage from the TV series Severance and developed all motion design, compositing, character framing, color treatment, and graphic systems from scratch. Every scene transition, visual rhythm, and information overlay is original work.
Process
Motion Tracking
The opening sequence uses a rotating ceiling panel shot as the base footage. I applied motion tracking to each individual panel, embedding separate video clips that follow the rotation precisely, turning a single architectural shot into a multi-screen composition where each panel carries its own footage. The embedded clips were not chosen at random. Each one was selected based on color and content to serve the overall narrative.
Masking
For each character, I used masking to slide a color background and data overlays into the frame, layering visual information over the original footage without cutting away from the character.
Scene Transitions
Each character's introduction is built around a lateral screen shift, where a new footage panel slides in from the side and splits the frame, creating a rhythm that carries through the entire sequence.
